REPORTS: Tanko, Attram Emerge as Interim Coaching Options for Black Stars’ Crucial AFCON Return

Former Black Stars Assistant Coach Ibrahim Tanko and Former Ghana U23 Assistant Coach Godwin Attram has emerged as the leading candidate to take over the Black Stars coaching job on an interim basis.

With the Ghana Football Association (GFA) racing against time ahead of next month’s critical Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, the duo is heavily under consideration to steady the ship and rescue Ghana’s stuttering qualification campaign.

The Black Stars are yet to find a new gaffer for the vacant role after losing two games in their opening games of the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier under gaffer Carlos Queiroz.

Under Queiroz, Ghana lost 2-0 to Ivory Coast and a 4-2 defeat to the Gambia at home.

The results have left the Black Stars without a point from their first two matches, increasing the pressure on the team to turn their fortunes around in the remaining fixtures.

With two matches against Somalia scheduled for November, the GFA is considering an interim coach to oversee the team while a search for a permanent successor to Queiroz continues.

Reports say the GFA is considering picking Ibrahim Tanko, the current head coach of Medeama and Godwin Attram, who is an assistant coach of the Black Stars.

Both candidates have experience within Ghana’s national team structure.

Ghana will now have to focus on securing positive results against Somalia to give their AFCON qualification campaign a much-needed boost in November.
