Carlos Queiroz has left his position as head coach of the Ghana national team after mutually agreeing with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to terminate his contract with immediate effect.
The Portuguese coach’s departure was confirmed by the GFA on Thursday following discussions between both parties, bringing his tenure as Black Stars head coach to an end after six months.
The decision to release Carlos Queiroz was due to Ghana’s poor start to the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
After two games in the first round of qualifying, Ghana has picked up two straight defeats, a 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast and a disappointing 4-2 defeat to Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday.
The results have left Ghana without a point from their opening two matches of the qualifying campaign and increased pressure on the technical team.
Following his departure, Queiroz thanked the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the Technical Team, and the entire playing body for their support during his time with the team.
“It has been an honor to serve Ghana and the Black Stars. I sincerely thank the Ghana Football Association and particularly its president for their trust and for the opportunity to lead such a proud football nation.
I came to Ghana determined to help build a stronger future for the Black Stars and support the development of the country’s talent. Despite our commitment and efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end.
I leave with respect, gratitude, and pride. I thank my technical staff and everyone who supported us, particularly since the start of our work preparing for World Cup 2026,” he said.
The GFA is now expected to begin the process of determining the next steps for the Black Stars, with Ghana’s AFCON 2027 qualification campaign requiring an immediate amendment.
