Retaining the Title Won’t Be Easy — Ibrahim Tanko Reacts to Medeama’s Gritty Win Over Port City

Medeama SC boss Ibrahim Tanko has admitted that defending their league crown will test his squad’s absolute limits after navigating a grueling 1-0 midweek victory over Port City side on Wednesday.

Tanko praised his side’s resilience to grind out the win but cautioned that “maintaining” their status at the top will only get harder as opponents raise their game against the champions.

The crucial win at the TNA Stadium, secured by a first-half strike from Kelvin Nkrumah, temporarily propelled the defending champions to the top of the league table.

Speaking in a post-match interview after the victory, Tanko emphasized that as reigning titleholders, they now carry a massive target on their backs with rival clubs heavily prepared to dethrone them.

“It’s not going to be easy this season because all the teams are prepared; we are the defending champions, so definitely we are trying to maintain it,” he told Medeama TV.

The reigning champions picked an early exit from the CAF Champions League in the preliminary stages following a 4-1 defeat on aggregate to Congolese side TM Mazembe.

With four games played in the ongoing 2026/27 season, Medeama have won two and drawn two, sitting at the apex of the league log with eight points.

After a slim victory at home, the yellow and mauve lads will make a trip to the Bono Region to face Debibi United on match day 5, a new promoted side on Sunday, October 4.
